Email Alerting :

Email is everywhere.  Virtually all cell phones support text messages via email, virtually everone has a cell phone, and chances are that if you are away from home, it is being carried on you at all times.  This makes email alerting/text messaging an ideal front-line alerting mechanism.  If you are at the office you can have alerts sent to your corporate email account (although you might want to enable email spam prevention to keep the neighbor's poodle who continuously sets off your motion sensor from spamming your corporate email system).

In addition to specifying which X10 Events you want to Alert on, you can have Weather Alerts sent.  You may receive a Weather Alert about potential flash flooding this evening sent to your cell phone, and decide to leave work early to avoid a stressful evening commute. 

And lastly, if you leave the country and visit an internet cafe, you could check webmail to verify no alerts have occured.  Email has that pervasiveness.
